One of the more impressive churches in the Poncey-Highland area, Druid Hills Baptist Church has been a mainstay on Ponce de Leon Ave between Midtown and Downtown for one hundred years. The century-old church hopes to commemorate the occasion by selling the back portion of its land to a developer with mixed-use aspirations. According to Pastor Mimi Walker, the church is in some financial trouble and selling this land could give the church the funding it needs to make repairs and improve general upkeep.
Planning permits were filed this last month and while the actual church building won’t be altered if the land is indeed purchased and re-developed, it’s likely that the Montessori school, church offices, and brick building additions will be bulldozed to make way for the new project. Kronberg Wall, an architecture firm here in Atlanta, is working with the church to determine what exactly will go on this land if purchased. It is rumored that as many as 115 condo or apartment units could be included in the project; the estimated amount of retail space is still yet to be determined.Share
